New Delhi: Microsoft’s next-generation gaming console, known as Project Helix, is targeting a launch during the 2028 holiday season, according to a Fortune profile of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Internal projections suggest the console could cost between $1,200 and $1,800, equivalent to roughly Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh.
Before the new console arrives, Microsoft is planning to launch a next-generation Xbox handheld during the 2027 holiday season.
A New Xbox Handheld Coming In 2027
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has indicated that the next generation of Xbox will comprise a “family of devices” designed for different types of gamers.
Microsoft plans to partner with third-party manufacturers to develop new portable systems, similar to its previous collaboration with Asus on the ROG Ally. The upcoming handheld is being designed to provide gamers with a smooth, console-like experience while playing on the go.
Why Is Project Helix So Expensive?
The projected price of $1,800 would make Project Helix significantly more expensive than existing gaming consoles.
The current artificial intelligence (AI) boom is cited as a major factor behind rising hardware costs. AI data centres are purchasing large quantities of computer memory and storage, increasing demand and driving up manufacturing costs for essential components.
Unless Microsoft decides to subsidise the hardware by selling it at a loss, these higher manufacturing costs could be passed on to buyers.
Project Helix is being designed as a high-end hybrid device capable of running both Xbox and PC games. It is also expected to use AMD’s next-generation FSR Diamond upscaling technology, which AMD says is intended to improve gaming performance and visual quality.
Major Changes Coming To Xbox Game Pass
Microsoft is also reportedly planning a major overhaul of Xbox Game Pass, introducing a flexible, tiered, “à la carte” model.
Instead of paying one flat fee for everything, subscribers could choose specific features based on their needs. These may include console-only games, multiplayer access and cloud streaming. Microsoft still has time to finalise Project Helix’s pricing. Meanwhile, gamers can look forward to the new Xbox handheld, expected in 2027.
