A fast-moving wildfire near Spearfish, South Dakota, triggered evacuation orders Monday after rapidly spreading across the hills of Lookout Mountain, with officials warning residents in the immediate area to leave.
The Lookout Fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. near Cactus Place, off Interstate 90 and about two miles northwest of Lookout Mountain. It was initially estimated at 40 acres before growing to 100 acres and later reaching around 300 acres.
Incident officials said the fire’s northern forward progression had been stopped, while crews continued working along the southern flank.
Firefighters were also constructing an indirect dozer line across the southern end and over the ridge. Aircraft continued dropping water and retardant as crews strengthened fire lines.
A Type III Incident Management Team was assigned to the operation, with the fire expected to remain staffed throughout the night.
Lawrence County Emergency Management issued a wireless emergency alert covering Lookout Mountain, Kerwin Road, Lookout Vista Road and surrounding areas.
Residents helped move cattle to safety as homeowners prepared for possible evacuation.
The cause of the fire, containment percentage and any structural damage had not been confirmed. The South Dakota Highway Patrol also warned motorists against stopping along I-90 to photograph the fire, citing safety risks to passing traffic.
