Modi, Putin To Hold Bilateral Talks Ahead Of BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to hold a bilateral meeting on September 11, on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the meeting during a virtual briefing, saying the two leaders will begin with discussions on bilateral issues. The proposed sale of Russia’s Su-57 fighter aircraft to India, along with trade and economic cooperation, is also expected to feature in the talks.

The BRICS Summit will take place at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13, with India holding the presidency of the grouping in 2026.

The 11-member core BRICS grouping includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Ten additional countries are part of the broader framework as partner nations.

Putin has confirmed his participation, while Chinese President Xi Jinping is also expected to attend. Several other BRICS leaders, partner-country representatives and UN Secretary-General António Guterres are expected at the summit.

Modi and Putin last met on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek, where Modi called for a shift from war towards peace, saying, “We must move from endless war towards the end of war, which is very necessary for the well-being of humanity.”
