Colombo: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday emphasised the close relationship between India and Sri Lanka, describing the two neighbours as examples of the “strength and resilience of democracy” during his meeting with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo.
Singh noted the strong democratic traditions of both countries and highlighted the role of women leaders, while also recalling Amarasuriya’s association with India, where she studied at Delhi University. He said her connection with India would further contribute to strengthening bilateral relations.
The discussions covered development cooperation, education and the shared cultural and civilisational heritage between the two countries. Singh said Sri Lanka occupies an important position in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR and reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to the island nation’s development and prosperity.
Referring to the Ditwah cyclone, Singh said India provided extensive assistance to Sri Lanka through Operation Sagar Bandhu, stressing that the support was part of India’s “duty and obligation” and was “not a favour”.
Singh also said he had a “very fruitful and productive meeting” with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and expressed confidence that his leadership would help deepen bilateral cooperation.
India had earlier extended about USD 4 billion in financial assistance to Sri Lanka during its 2022 economic crisis, helping the country maintain essential imports and foreign exchange reserves.
Later, Singh visited Colombo’s Gangaramaya Temple and sought the blessings of Lord Buddha. He said Buddha’s message of peace, brotherhood and mutual understanding remained significant in addressing geopolitical challenges.
