Two retired teachers who were victims of cyber fraud have recovered part of, or in one case, all of the money they lost in separate digital arrest scams.
A 73-year-old retired teacher from Ahmedabad’s Ellisbridge area, who was allegedly cheated of Rs 11.42 crore, received Rs 17 lakh after authorities managed to freeze and trace part of the funds. A court order covered Rs 66.92 lakh linked to the case, with the remaining recovered amount expected to be returned to her.
The case has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In a separate case, a retired teacher from Surat recovered the entire Rs 40 lakh allegedly taken from her by cyber fraudsters. Officials said efforts were made to trace and recover funds belonging to several retired teachers ahead of Teachers’ Day on September 5.
SP Sanjay Keshawala of the Cyber Center of Excellence said the recoveries were part of efforts to help victims retrieve money lost in cyber fraud.
Both cases were registered through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Digital arrest scams typically involve criminals posing as police officers, CBI officials, telecom authorities or other government representatives. They threaten victims with arrest or legal action and pressure them into transferring money.
Authorities have repeatedly advised people, especially senior citizens, not to transfer money or share sensitive banking details in response to such calls.
