US Supreme Court Blocks Republican-Drawn Missouri Congressional Map

The US Supreme Court has blocked Missouri from using a Republican-drawn congressional map in the November 3 midterm elections, dealing a setback to President Donald Trump and Republican efforts to protect their narrow House majority.

The justices granted an emergency request from groups challenging the map and suspended a federal judge’s ruling that had allowed the new boundaries to be used.

The decision marks the second time in three days that the Supreme Court has rejected efforts to preserve the Republican-backed map. The brief order was unsigned and offered no explanation, with no justice publicly dissenting.

The dispute began after Missouri Republicans adopted the new boundaries in 2025 as part of an effort supported by Trump.

The map removed the Kansas City-based district held by longtime Democratic Representative Emanuel Cleaver.

A group called People Not Politicians gathered enough signatures to seek a referendum on the map. The Missouri Supreme Court ruled that the referendum was “legal, sufficient, and timely,” meaning the map cannot take effect unless voters approve it.
