An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck Papua New Guinea on Sunday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 114 km (70.8 miles), GFZ said.

The US Geological Survey separately recorded a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in the Eastern New Guinea region later on Sunday, at a depth of about 104 km. Its epicentre was located around 50 km northeast of Kainantu and about 85 km south of Madang.

The USGS assessment indicated a low likelihood of casualties and significant economic losses from the 6.4-magnitude event. It also reported no tsunami threat associated with the earthquake.

Papua New Guinea is located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire and frequently experiences earthquakes.

The situation remains subject to further assessment, with authorities expected to provide updates if damage or casualties are reported.
