Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones toward Russia overnight, including hundreds aimed at Moscow, Russian officials said on Sunday. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the assault as the “largest ever” attack on the capital.
Sobyanin said 450 drones were destroyed while heading toward Moscow, but the attack damaged the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building.
Across the wider Moscow region, two people were killed and 20 others injured, according to regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv used various missiles and drones, including the domestically produced Flamingo and Pelican missiles, against oil and logistics facilities. He said the strikes were intended to put financial pressure on Russia’s war effort.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had destroyed 1,110 Ukrainian drones across Russia, as well as over Crimea and the Black Sea.
The strikes came on the final day of Russia’s parliamentary elections, which were held without significant opposition to President Vladimir Putin’s policies. Voting also took place in four Ukrainian regions claimed by Moscow and in Crimea, actions Kyiv has called illegal.
