V4 Nations Back India’s Permanent UNSC Seat Bid, Plan Closer Cooperation

India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) received collective support from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, the four members of the Visegrad Group (V4), during their first meeting with India on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.

Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár said the V4 countries agreed that India should have a place as a permanent member of the Security Council.

India has long sought reforms to make the 15-member council more representative of current global realities.

The meeting also focused on strengthening ties between India and the four Central European countries.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described the meeting as a new milestone and said both sides agreed to hold annual foreign ministers’ meetings.

India and the V4 also plan to establish an annual business forum to promote trade and investment, including cooperation in technology, manufacturing and supply chains. Discussions covered defence, technology, connectivity and other areas of mutual interest.

The V4 endorsement adds another group of European countries to those supporting India’s campaign for a larger role in the UN’s key decision-making body.

However, any restructuring of the Security Council would require wider negotiations among UN member states and the existing permanent members.
