Iran’s Araghchi Arrives in New York For UN General Assembly Amid US Tensions

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly, as tensions between Tehran and Washington continue.

He is expected to hold consultations with foreign officials on regional developments during the high-level week.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to travel to New York on Tuesday and address the General Assembly on Wednesday, September 23.

His programme is also expected to include meetings with foreign leaders, officials, Iranian expatriates and US-based experts and think tanks.

The Iranian delegation’s visit comes with restrictions imposed by Washington.

The US approved visas for senior Iranian officials, including Pezeshkian and Araghchi, while some members of the wider delegation were reportedly denied visas and movement restrictions were placed on those attending the UN session.

The UN General Assembly’s high-level week is being held from September 22 to 28 under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

The visit comes as Washington increases economic pressure on Tehran.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that foreign companies providing fuel, landing services or ticketing support to Iranian airlines could face secondary sanctions from September 23.
