US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has criticised the effectiveness of the international system, saying it is failing to address major global conflicts, including potential tensions between India and Pakistan.
Speaking to reporters in New York during the high-level UN General Assembly session, Rubio said Washington recognises the value of institutions such as the United Nations but believes they are not fulfilling their potential.
He argued that international institutions have expanded beyond their original mandate and are struggling to resolve major disputes worldwide.
Rubio cited conflicts involving Thailand and Cambodia, the possibility of tensions between India and Pakistan, and ongoing crises in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Rwanda. He said a functional international framework could help address such disputes.
He also stressed that the United States would continue to put its national interests first, rather than prioritising the international order.
His comments came a day after US President Donald Trump repeated his claim that he helped resolve the India-Pakistan conflict last year.
