NM VERIFIED
NewsMobile verified the claim and found that it is misleading.
The NM team initiated its verification by conducting a reverse image search using keyframes from the viral video. During the investigation, we found a longer version of the video uploaded on The Indian Express’s official YouTube channel on April 21, 2026. According to the video’s description, it was recorded during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign.
At the 1:58 mark in the video, a reporter can be heard asking Maithili Thakur about women’s safety in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, in response to remarks made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Thakur responds by saying that she is a daughter of Bihar and feels safe there.
We also compared the viral video with a screenshot from The Indian Express’s YouTube video. Our comparison revealed that both clips feature the same visuals, confirming that the viral video is an excerpt from the older recording.

Furthermore, we found a post shared by Maithili Thakur on her official X account on September 22, 2026, in which she condemned the molestation incident in Jamui. She described the incident as shameful and heartbreaking and called for strict legal action against the accused. This further establishes that her earlier remarks were unrelated to the incident.

Hence, it is evident that an old video of Maithili Thakur, recorded during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign in April 2026, is being falsely linked to the Jamui molestation case. The viral claim is misleading.
