Air India’s incoming CEO Tewolde Gebremariam has outlined his priorities ahead of taking charge of the Tata-owned airline, stressing that the focus must begin with reliable day-to-day operations and safety.
Speaking at an employee townhall on Monday, Gebremariam said improving operational performance means getting basic services right, including punctual flights, timely baggage delivery and clean aircraft. He also stressed the need for employees to feel confident about reporting safety concerns.
“I am coming from the US so allow me to borrow a phrase, Maga. We will Make Air India Great Again.”
Gebremariam also made safety the central priority, telling employees, “A safety-first culture has to be our number one priority. If something is not right, stop.”
He is awaiting mandatory regulatory clearances before officially assuming the role from Campbell Wilson. His appointment comes as Air India continues its major transformation under the Tata Group, including fleet renewal and the integration of its airline businesses.
However, the airline reported a consolidated net loss of ₹22,238 crore in fiscal 2026, while operating revenue declined by more than nine percent.
Gebremariam previously led Ethiopian Airlines and will now face the challenge of improving Air India’s reliability while managing costs and supporting its expansion.
