Former Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, a 1975-batch IAS officer who led Delhi’s administration during the 2010 Commonwealth Games, allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Noida, according to the sources quoted by reports.
The incident took place on September 6 at Mehta’s flat in Kendriya Vihar-2 Society, Sector 82. He was around 74 to 75 years old. Police received information through Dial-112, after which a team from the Phase-2 police station reached the society.
The flat’s door was locked from inside, prompting police to break it open. Mehta was subsequently found hanging from a ceiling fan inside the residence.
According to reports, police also recovered a purported suicide note from the flat. The note reportedly mentioned “mental and health issues” as the reasons behind his decision. A forensic team examined the premises and collected evidence.
Mehta’s wife, Sumanti Mehta, was in Dehradun visiting their son when she became concerned after he repeatedly failed to answer her calls.
Police are examining the note, forensic findings and other evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. After the inquest and post-mortem, his body was handed over to the family and cremated at the Lodhi Road crematorium.
