Kanpur Trader Dies After Assault Over Objecting To Public Urination

Kanpur: A Kanpur trader died two days after allegedly being brutally assaulted by four men after he objected to them urinating outside a market and nearby houses.

The victim, identified as Amit Gupta, was reportedly attacked by the men, who were allegedly intoxicated at the time.

Gupta, an auto trader, was standing outside the market when he asked the men not to urinate at the spot, pointing out that houses were located opposite.

The men allegedly took offence, knocked him to the ground and repeatedly beat him, causing a severe head injury. He lost consciousness at the scene and was rushed to hospital by his family, but doctors could not revive him. He died two days later.

CCTV footage outside Gupta’s home captured the assault, including the attackers continuing to beat him after he fell. The family handed the footage to police.

Police registered a case against unidentified persons after a delay of around 72 hours and have not made any arrests. Officers said they are working to identify those seen in the footage. Gupta’s post-mortem was conducted before his body was handed to the family.

Gupta’s wife Shalini Gupta, sister Shivani and other relatives said they fear for their safety as the accused remain at large. Shalini said her children are frightened to use the same road and demanded protection and swift justice.

Gupta was one of three brothers and three sisters, and his mother had died only days before the incident.
