Delhi Govt To Build Hostels For 10,000 Students

New Delhi: The Delhi government will construct hostel facilities for 10,000 college and university students, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday, with the project aimed at providing safe and affordable accommodation in the national capital.

The Chief Minister’s Office said work on the initiative has already commenced, while inter-departmental consultations are being held to identify suitable land and finalise designs for the proposed hostels.

Gupta said the facilities will be open to both male and female students enrolled in colleges and universities in Delhi.

“The Delhi government has decided to construct hostels for 10,000 students, ensuring their safety, security, and access to affordable housing. These hostels will cater to both male and female students. Any student enrolled in a university or college in Delhi will be able to avail of these facilities,” she said.

The government has also consulted agencies and departments that could undertake construction of the facilities and has begun preparing a policy based on students’ accommodation and other daily needs.

Gupta said the hostels would provide parents with greater assurance about their children’s safety and enable students to concentrate on their studies without concerns over accommodation and food.

The initiative comes in the wake of the September 6 Satya Niketan building collapse, in which seven people, including five students and two labourers, were killed. The five-storey structure opposite Sri Venkateswara College was being used as a private boys’ hostel.
