Colombia’s James Rodríguez Retires From International Football

Colombia midfielder James Rodríguez has announced his retirement from international football, ending a distinguished career with the national team after more than a decade at the highest level.

Rodríguez confirmed his decision in an emotional message to fans on social media, with his final appearance for Colombia coming at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Colombia’s campaign ended in the Round of 16 following a defeat to Switzerland.

“The moment has come. Thank you for every match, every joy, every tear, and every dream we shared together. Representing the Colombian national team was one of the greatest honours of my life. Thank you, Colombia, and forever,” Rodríguez wrote on X.

The midfielder rose to global prominence during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he scored six goals to win the Golden Boot and helped Colombia reach the quarter-finals.

Rodríguez subsequently represented Colombia at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups, remaining a key figure for the national side across four editions of the tournament.

He finished his international career with 131 appearances, 31 goals and 43 assists for Colombia. Across the three World Cups following his breakthrough campaign in 2014, he recorded six goals and four assists.

Rodríguez also played a prominent role in Colombia’s Copa America campaigns. He helped the team finish runners-up in 2016 and reach the final in 2024, where they were defeated by Argentina.

At the Copa America, Rodríguez made 14 appearances, scoring once and providing eight assists, further underlining his influence in Colombia’s midfield and attacking play.

His international career included memorable performances, particularly during the 2014 World Cup, and established Rodríguez as one of the most prominent figures in Colombian football.
