Messi’s Last Dance: Argentina Call Up Icon for Emotional Farewell

Buenos Aires: There are some football careers that end with a final whistle. Lionel Messi appears destined to end with a farewell.

Argentina have included Messi in their squad for a series of home friendlies, opening the door for the 39-year-old captain to wear the famous blue-and-white shirt one final time on home soil.

The Argentine Football Association has invited Messi to feature in the Oct. 6 friendly against Benin at Buenos Aires’ Estadio Monumental , a match intended to serve as his farewell appearance for the national team. Messi has yet to confirm whether he will take part, but the invitation itself carries the weight of an era coming to an end.

The match will come just weeks after Messi announced his international retirement on Aug. 31, bringing the curtain down on a career with Argentina that stretched across more than two decades. His decision followed Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Yet Messi’s international story was never simply about how it would end.

For years, his Argentina career was defined by the tension between brilliance and heartbreak. There were the defeats, the missed opportunities and the 2016 announcement that he was stepping away from international football. There was also the return, followed by the transformation of his relationship with the national team.

The trophies eventually arrived.

Messi captained Argentina to Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024 before leading the country to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His international legacy, once clouded by the absence of a major senior title, became inseparable from Argentina’s most celebrated modern era.

Now, Argentina are preparing for football after Messi.

The upcoming friendlies against Bolivia on Sept. 30, Burkina Faso on Oct. 3 and Benin on Oct. 6 will mark the national team’s first matches since the 2026 World Cup. The Oct. 6 fixture at the Monumental is expected to be the emotional centerpiece, with AFA president Claudio Tapia describing the invitation as an opportunity to give the national-team icon and captain the farewell he deserves.

The symbolism of the venue is hard to miss.

The Monumental is where generations of Argentine supporters have celebrated their greatest football nights. If Messi accepts the invitation, it will become the setting for something different: not another campaign, not another qualification battle, not another pursuit of a trophy, but a goodbye.

And perhaps that is the fitting conclusion to Messi’s Argentina story.

The boy who left Rosario for Barcelona became the player Argentina expected to carry its hopes. The captain who endured years of criticism eventually lifted the World Cup. The No. 10 who once walked away from international football returned to become the face of a golden generation.

Now, after more than 20 years, Argentina are preparing to say goodbye.

Not to a player who simply scored goals or won trophies, but to the figure who came to represent an entire footballing era.

If Messi walks onto the Monumental pitch on Oct. 6, the occasion will not be about what comes next.

For one night, it will be about everything that came before.
