Anthropic Weighs New AI Model As OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra Gains Ground

Anthropic is considering launching a new artificial intelligence model as it seeks to respond to growing competition from OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, according to the report.

The discussions come ahead of Anthropic’s expected initial public offering (IPO) and shortly after CEO Dario Amodei called for a slower pace of AI development over safety concerns. In a September 12 essay, Amodei warned that increasingly capable AI agents could become difficult for humans to control.

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on September 3 with upgrades in computer use, software engineering, cybersecurity and professional tasks.

Data from corporate spending platform Ramp showed Astra accounting for around 13% of tracked enterprise AI spending, compared with about 8% for Anthropic’s Claude Fable.

OpenRouter also reported that spending on OpenAI models exceeded spending on Anthropic models among its users last week, the first such lead in more than two years.

Anthropic is weighing the safety of its next model against the cost of developing and releasing it, as investors increasingly focus on profitability amid higher interest rates and competition from open-source AI.

Anthropic’s annualised revenue run rate exceeded $65 billion by July, compared with more than $40 billion for OpenAI. Investors expect competition among Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and other AI firms to continue shifting as new models are released.

Anthropic declined to comment.
