Delhi is planning to introduce a dedicated “Pink Force” of trained women police personnel following four alleged rape and sexual assault cases involving minors reported in the capital within around 10 days.
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed Delhi Police to develop the specialised unit, modelled on Goa Police’s Pink Force.
The personnel will patrol schools, colleges, metro stations and other vulnerable locations, with particular attention to sensitive hours.
The latest incident was reported on Monday, when a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men at Astha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir.
The accused allegedly pretended to be policemen before separating the girl from her male friend. One suspect was later apprehended following an exchange of fire and sustained a bullet injury to his leg.
Other recent cases include alleged sexual assaults involving a minor in Sadar Bazar and a six-year-old girl in Kishanganj, along with the alleged gang-rape and murder of a 16-year-old in Swaroop Nagar.
Women-only patrols already operate in parts of Delhi. The proposed force would bring such efforts under a dedicated structure and work alongside ‘Operation Shishtachar’.
Sandhu has also directed authorities to digitally track complaints received through Jan Sunwai, strengthen foot and motorcycle patrols, and organise school awareness sessions on child safety, cybercrime, substance abuse and road safety.
