Asian Games: Tajinderpal Toor Wins Shot Put Silver; Animesh Reaches 200m Final

Aichi-Nagoya: India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor added another Asian Games medal to his collection, winning silver in the men’s shot put final with a best effort of 20.64 metres, while sprinter Animesh Kujur advanced to the 200m final at the Aichi-Nagoya Games on Saturday.

Toor produced his best throw with his fifth attempt but could not surpass Iran’s Mohammadreza Tayebise, who secured gold with a Games Record of 20.81 metres. The Indian settled for silver after previously winning the top prize at the 2018 Jakarta and 2022 Hangzhou editions.

In the men’s 200m, Kujur secured his place in the medal race by finishing second in the third semifinal in 20.81 seconds. Thailand’s Puripol Boonson topped the race in a Games Record 20.10 seconds.

Kujur’s qualification marked a strong response after he missed out on a place in the 100m final. He will now return to the track for the 200m final with a medal opportunity.

India also secured two finalists in the men’s 1500m, with Gulveer Singh and Yoonus Shah progressing from their respective semifinal heats.

Gulveer clocked 3:45.79 to finish third in Heat 2, while Yoonus also took third place in Heat 1 with a time of 3:45.77. Both will compete in the 1500m final scheduled for the day after tomorrow.

Earlier, India retained the men’s kabaddi title after overcoming Iran 40-34 in the final. The defending champions trailed 17-18 at half-time before producing a dominant second-half display to turn the contest around and secure another Asian Games gold.
