London: The U.S. Embassy in London has issued a security alert for American citizens in the United Kingdom after five men were arrested near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.
The arrests were made early Sunday after police received a report about three suspicious vehicles that appeared to be traveling toward the military air base. Armed officers subsequently detained the five men in the nearby Whelford area. They were initially arrested on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act and later detained on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act under the Terrorism Act.
In its security alert, the US Embassy said American citizens should exercise caution and remain mindful of their personal security. British authorities also evacuated residents from the area as bomb disposal specialists examined the vehicles.
“US citizens are encouraged to exercise caution and be mindful of personal security,” the embassy said, adding that local authorities were evacuating some residents as a precaution.
The embassy noted that British authorities currently rate the terrorism threat in the UK as “severe,” meaning an attack is highly likely. It warned that U.S.-associated facilities, gatherings and organizations could face heightened risks.
American citizens were urged to follow instructions from emergency services and law enforcement agencies, remain aware of their surroundings, review their personal security arrangements, keep family and friends informed and monitor local media for developments.
The embassy also encouraged US citizens in Britain to enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive security and travel notifications.
The arrests triggered a major security operation around RAF Fairford, with authorities establishing a 400-meter cordon while British Army bomb disposal teams examined the three vehicles. About 85 households in Whelford were evacuated during the operation.
President Donald Trump said Sunday that American and British authorities had worked together in the operation.
“Working with Britain, it was an amazing job,” Trump told reporters. He said the suspects had been under investigation and alleged they were “looking to do big damage.”
British authorities have not publicly identified the suspects or disclosed their nationalities or a confirmed motive. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not publicly established any link to a particular organization or foreign government.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the incident was deeply concerning for residents in the area and thanked Gloucestershire Police, counterterrorism officers, the armed forces and emergency responders involved in the operation.
“I am especially grateful to those residents who have been asked to leave their homes while precautionary checks are carried out,” Burnham said, urging the public not to speculate while investigators establish the facts.
RAF Fairford is a UK-owned military base used by the US Air Force and hosts the 501st Combat Support Wing. The base has served as an important staging location for US military aircraft and has been used for operations involving American bombers.
The security operation comes amid heightened tensions surrounding US military operations in the Middle East. Fairford has been used by American aircraft in operations against Iran, making the base a particularly sensitive military facility.
British counterterrorism police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrests, while authorities examine the vehicles and other material recovered from the scene.
