A 19-year-old man from Ahmedabad’s Navrangpura allegedly lost ₹96,000 after downloading an APK file advertised as a way to watch a web series on Instagram.
The man reportedly came across an advertisement for the series and clicked on it. He was then prompted to download an APK file to access the content.
After installing the file, however, the promised web series did not play. Instead, his phone began hanging unexpectedly. Suspecting that the application could be unsafe, he deleted it from his device.
The incident came to light a few days later when the man checked his bank account while preparing to apply for an IPO. He discovered an unauthorised transaction of ₹96,000.
He suspected that the APK file had compromised his phone and may have enabled the fraudulent transaction. He subsequently approached the Navrangpura Police Station and filed a complaint.
Police have registered the case and launched an investigation into the alleged cyber fraud.
