A 46-year-old man from Kerala has been arrested in connection with a digital arrest scam in which a retired government doctor from Coimbatore was allegedly cheated of ₹98.03 lakh.
According to Coimbatore Cyber Crime Police, the doctor received a WhatsApp video call from people posing as senior CBI officials. They allegedly told her that her bank account was linked to illegal transactions and placed her under “digital arrest”. She was then asked to transfer her savings to accounts provided for verification.
Police traced ₹20 lakh of the defrauded amount to a bank account operated by the arrested man, identified as Rajesh K.R. Investigators allege that he transferred the money onward and received ₹15,000 as commission.
Police are also examining other suspicious transactions linked to his account to determine whether it was used to route money from other cyber fraud cases. His alleged role and connections with the wider network are still under investigation.
Reader’s Note
There is no legal process called “digital arrest” in India. Genuine law-enforcement agencies do not ask people to transfer money to private accounts for verification. If you receive such a call, disconnect immediately and report it to 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
