UIDAI Revises Aadhaar Name Update Rules; All You Need To Know

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has revised its rules for updating names on Aadhaar, introducing different document requirements based on the nature of the correction.

The new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), issued on September 18, 2026, replaces the earlier 2021 process.

Under the revised rules, minor corrections such as expanding initials, adding or removing a middle name or surname, changing name order, similar-sounding spelling corrections, random capitalisation and removal of dots can generally be made using valid Proof of Identity (PoI).

For children, Proof of Relationship (PoR) may apply in Head of Family-based requests.

For data-entry errors, adults must submit an Annexure B affidavit with PoI or PoR, while minors require an Annexure C affidavit from a parent or legal guardian.

The requested name must match the correct name in documents previously submitted to UIDAI. Regional-language errors are also covered.

Marriage or divorce-related surname changes require an Annexure D affidavit with PoI, while a registered marriage certificate may also support the request.

Separate provisions apply to gender-related name changes and names containing “urf” or “alias”, with Annexure E/F requirements.

For a complete name change, a Gazette notification, published newspaper advertisements and PoI are required. UIDAI will verify documents, affidavits and Gazette notices before processing requests.
