Washington, DC: US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” as trade tensions between the United States and Canada continue to escalate.

Trump said the US is “giving serious consideration” to the proposed name change, while also accusing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of lying. The remark came amid an ongoing dispute over tariffs and trade.

Talks between Washington and Ottawa broke down last week, after which Trump imposed 50% tariffs on several Canadian goods, including beer, cheese and electronics.
Carney has promised retaliation, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned that his province could take measures affecting the US economy, including cutting electricity and critical mineral supplies.
The dispute has also involved claims over Canada’s French-language policies. Carney alleged that the US had made demands related to Quebec’s use of English.
Trump rejected the claim, saying, “I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French!” He also accused Carney of making up the allegation and added, “I love French Canadians!”
