Nepal Flash Flood Sweeps Away Houses, Bridges in Gorkha; Four Missing

A flash flood in Nepal’s Gorkha district swept away several houses and bridges early Sunday after a landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki River before the blockage gave way.

The flood, which struck around 4 am, also damaged infrastructure and a construction site for the 341-megawatt Budhi Gandaki hydropower project.

Authorities said the full extent of the damage was still being assessed, with four people reported missing and no confirmed casualties in the Budhi Gandaki incident.

At least 40 houses across five settlements were swept away, according to Chumnubri Rural Municipality Vice-Chairperson Laxmi Gurung.

Affected settlements include Paiyun, Jagat, Bagar, Salleri and Ghattikhola, while homes in Sirdibas and Dharche were also damaged or inundated.

Several bridges connecting villages and neighbouring districts were destroyed, including suspension bridges linking Nyakchet, Sirdibas, Philim Bazaar, Machhakhola and Kerauja, as well as an iron bridge at Soti and a bridge connecting Gorkha and Dhading.

Four people staying in a shed beside the Ungilung River in Chumchet, Chumnubri-6, remain missing.

Floodwaters also swept away a construction camp and equipment at the hydropower project site in Salleri. Around 20–22 houses in Salleri and several homes in lower Machhakhola were reported inundated or at risk.

Police and local authorities have urged residents in Khorlabensi, Machhakhola, Soti, Arkhet and Arughat to move to safer locations.

Rescue teams, including personnel sent from Kathmandu, have reached the affected area as officials continue assessing damage and warning communities along the riverbanks.
