A 58-year-old woman from Nagpur allegedly lost around ₹52 lakh after cyber fraudsters posing as senior police officers accused her of being linked to a money-laundering case and threatened her with “digital arrest.”
The woman, who lives in New Somalwara Peth, received a call on August 9 from a person claiming to be a police officer. The caller told her that her Aadhaar details had been used in an alleged money-laundering operation and warned that she could face arrest.
The fraudsters later moved the conversation to a social media platform and sent her fabricated documents to make the allegations appear legitimate. They allegedly kept her under pressure and instructed her to transfer money to multiple bank accounts.
Following their instructions, the woman made several transactions between August 9 and 14, ultimately losing around ₹52 lakh.
The incident came to light after she approached the police and reported the fraud. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Indian Penal Code. Police are investigating the transactions and efforts are underway to identify the accused. No arrests have been made so far.
Cybercrime officials have repeatedly warned that no genuine police or government agency can place a person under “digital arrest” or demand money to avoid arrest. Such threats are a common tactic used by fraudsters to frighten victims into transferring their savings.
