US President Donald Trump defended his decision to accept a luxury Boeing 747 from Qatar’s royal family, saying, “When you’re given gifts, you take ’em,” while campaigning in Bullhead City, Arizona, on Wednesday.
Trump told supporters he had learned that Qatar had one of the best Boeing 747 aircraft and initially asked the country’s leader whether he could borrow it. He said the emir subsequently offered the plane as a gift, which he accepted last year despite strong bipartisan criticism, including from some Republican allies.
The aircraft, featuring a red, white, blue and gold color scheme associated with Trump, was showcased during his campaign visit. Trump is touring the western US to rally Republican support ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress.
The gift has raised concerns over ethics, national security and potential foreign influence, given that Qatar is a foreign government and the aircraft is an exceptionally valuable asset. Trump has defended his decision despite criticism from lawmakers across party lines.
His campaign swing has included stops in Ohio, Alaska and Arizona, with Montana next on his schedule.
In Arizona, Trump backed Republican Andy Biggs in his contest against Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, accusing her of mishandling border security. Hobbs has defended her record, citing National Guard deployments and increased funding for local law enforcement.
Trump is stepping up his campaign appearances as Republicans face competitive races, rising living costs and concerns over his approval ratings.
His visit also highlighted economic challenges in Mohave County, where poverty and unemployment rates exceed state and national levels.
