Hyderabad Police Chief Flags WhatsApp Scam Warning Users Against Fake Bank Alerts

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar has cautioned citizens against suspicious WhatsApp messages posing as bank transaction alerts, warning that cybercriminals may use such messages to deceive users and expose them to financial fraud.

According to Sajjanar’s warning, scammers allegedly send messages from unknown numbers claiming that money has been debited from a recipient’s bank account. The messages then ask users to reply “NO” if they did not authorise the transaction. The commissioner cited a reported case in which a victim allegedly lost money after responding to such a message, without sharing an OTP or clicking a link.

However, the specific claim that simply replying “NO” can activate malware and empty a bank account has not been independently established. Users should remain cautious without assuming that a text reply alone can compromise their banking credentials.

Sajjanar advised people not to respond to suspicious messages or follow instructions from unknown senders. Any transaction alert should be verified through the bank’s official app, website or customer-care number.

Anyone who suspects they have been targeted by cyber fraud should immediately contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or report the incident at cybercrime.gov.in.
