New York City: The historic Plaza Hotel is set to shut down in January 2027 for at least four years as it undergoes extensive restoration work on its protected exterior.
The hotel announced on October 14 that the project would involve major repairs to its landmark façade, requiring a prolonged suspension of operations. Planning is still underway, with the restoration expected to follow historic preservation guidelines.
Since opening on October 1, 1907, the Plaza has hosted world leaders, dignitaries, celebrities and visitors from across the globe. Located on Fifth Avenue near Central Park, the property is renowned for its luxury accommodation, dining experiences, shopping facilities and grand event spaces.
The hotel currently features 282 guest rooms, including 102 suites, alongside 181 condominium units. However, uncertainty remains over whether condominium residents will have to leave during the restoration, as the hotel operator has not clarified the arrangements.
The closure will also affect hotel employees. The Hotel and Gaming Trades Council said 378 union members will be eligible to return to their jobs at their existing pay rates once the hotel reopens.
Meanwhile, the union plans to assist affected workers in finding temporary employment elsewhere.
Further details about the restoration process are yet to be finalised.
