Gill to Lead India in First Three ODIs, Iyer Takes Over for Final Two

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced India’s squads for the upcoming New Zealand tour, with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer set to share captaincy duties in the five-match ODI series.

Gill will lead the team in the first three matches before departing to prepare for the Test series. Iyer, named vice-captain for the opening leg, will take over as skipper for the fourth and fifth ODIs.

The ODI series will begin in Auckland on November 4, with the second and third matches scheduled in Wellington and Hamilton. The final two games will be played in Mount Maunganui on November 13 and 15.

India’s ODI squads feature senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, along with KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav are also included, while Anshul Kamboj has earned a place in the squad for the first three matches.

Wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra has been selected for the final two ODIs. Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna’s inclusion in the opening-leg squad is subject to fitness clearance.

Jasprit Bumrah has not been named in either ODI squad but will feature in the Test team. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who played in India’s recent home ODI series against the West Indies, has also been left out of the one-day selections.

For the final two ODIs, Iyer will lead a squad that includes Tilak Varma, Auqib Nabi, Yash Thakur and Kumar Kushagra, alongside several players retained from the first-leg team.

Gill will captain India in the Test series, with KL Rahul appointed vice-captain. The squad includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel. Pant’s availability will depend on fitness clearance.

Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep and Kamboj form the pace attack, while Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Kuldeep Yadav provide all-round and spin options.
