Around 25 to 30 people were reportedly taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, many of them in critical condition.

The incident occurred as thousands gathered at the pandal on Muktaram Babu Street. A sudden spell of rain reportedly prompted people to rush for shelter, triggering a crush in the narrow lanes leading to the venue. People were pushed against one another and fell on a makeshift staircase.

A section of the iron structure beneath which the Durga idol was placed is also suspected to have collapsed, potentially increasing the casualties.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweets, “I have spoken with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari regarding this incident. I will postpone all my scheduled programs in West Bengal for tomorrow and visit the hospital to meet the injured.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Health Minister Saradwat Mukherjee and Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal rushed to the hospital to assess the situation. Authorities have yet to provide a detailed official account of the incident.

Former chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over the tragedy. “Deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the stampede at the Chore Bagan Puja Pandal. I pray to Maa Durga for the speedy recovery of all those injured and for strength and courage for their families during this difficult time,” she wrote on X.
