Delhi Man Arrested In Rs 1.90 Crore Corporate Impersonation Scam In Chennai

Chennai: Avadi City Police have arrested a 27-year-old man from Delhi for his alleged involvement in a ₹1.90-crore online fraud targeting a private company in Chennai’s Ambattur Industrial Estate.

The case involves a method known as a “boss scam”, in which fraudsters impersonate senior company executives to manipulate employees into transferring corporate funds to accounts controlled by criminals.

According to the police, Soundararajan, general manager of Fluidtherm Design & Development Pvt. Ltd., received a WhatsApp message on August 13 that purportedly came from the company’s managing director. The message allegedly persuaded him to transfer ₹1.90 crore to a specified bank account.

The transfer prompted an investigation by the Cyber Crime Wing of Avadi City Police, which traced the alleged fraud and arrested the accused in Delhi. The man, aged 27, is suspected of being connected to the operation.

In a typical boss scam, criminals exploit workplace hierarchies and the trust employees place in senior management. They may use messaging platforms or other digital communication channels to pose as a chief executive officer, managing director or another senior official. Employees are then instructed to make urgent payments or transfer company money, often without independently verifying the request.

Such frauds can result in substantial financial losses when employees act on instructions they believe have come from authorised executives.

The arrest marks a development in the investigation into the alleged transfer of funds from the Ambattur-based company. Further details about the accused’s alleged role, the recovery of the money and whether other individuals were involved were not provided in the available report.
