Hollywood star Tom Cruise will be honoured with the American Film Institute’s 52nd Life Achievement Award, recognising his contributions to cinema. The award ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 24, 2027.
The AFI Board of Trustees announced the recognition, considered one of the film industry’s highest career honours. Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the board, praised Cruise’s achievements as an actor and producer, highlighting his dedication to filmmaking and the power of cinema to unite people.
A three-time Oscar nominee, Cruise has appeared in several successful films, including Risky Business, Top Gun, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men and the Mission: Impossible franchise. According to the announcement, his films have generated nearly 13 billion dollars at the global box office.
In 2025, Cruise received an Honorary Oscar at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards. His other accolades include recognition from the Cannes Film Festival, the Producers Guild of America and France’s Legion of Honour.
Cruise currently stars in Digger, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, and is expected to reprise his role as Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder 2.
First awarded to filmmaker John Ford in 1973, the AFI honour celebrates individuals whose work has advanced cinema and enriched American culture.
