Tibet Hit By Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Weeks After Deadly Floods

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck Tibet on Thursday, weeks after deadly flash floods ravaged the region last month.

According to the National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake struck at 8:03 pm at a depth of 173 km. The epicentre was located around 400 km from Lhasa, the Tibetan capital.

Just minutes later, another earthquake hit China at around 8.29 pm, some 505 km north-north-west of Arunachal Pradesh, said the National Center for Seismology. The depth of the earthquake was 15 km.

The earthquake occurred weeks after an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26 triggered devastating flash floods across the region. The floods swept away homes, roads and bridges, damaged hydropower projects and left thousands of people missing.

Search and recovery operations continued in the weeks following the disaster, with more than 6,000 people still reported missing in the affected area.

There was no immediate information available on casualties or damage caused by today’s earthquake. Further details about its impact are awaited.
