Kolkata: A 69-year-old widow of a senior Indian Army officer has allegedly lost Rs 15 lakh after cybercriminals impersonating Mumbai Police personnel threatened her with arrest in a digital arrest scam.
The fraud reportedly occurred between October 13 and 14. Following the victim’s complaint, an FIR was registered on October 20, and police have launched an investigation into the case.
According to police, the fraudsters contacted the woman and claimed she was linked to serious criminal cases. They also alleged that all mobile numbers registered in her name had been seized, warning her that she could face immediate arrest.
The callers reportedly appeared in police uniforms during video calls to make their claims seem credible. Intimidated by the threats and believing she was cooperating with law enforcement authorities, the woman shared personal and banking information before transferring Rs 15 lakh to bank accounts specified by the accused.
Kalighat Police, along with the South Division cyber cell, are investigating the case. Officers are tracing the beneficiary accounts and phone numbers used in the fraud to identify those responsible.
A senior divisional police officer said older adults can be particularly vulnerable when criminals exploit their trust in government agencies. The use of forged documents bearing official seals or the national emblem during video calls can further convince victims that the threats are genuine.
Police have reiterated that legitimate law enforcement officers do not demand money or banking details over phone calls or messages to settle criminal allegations.
Authorities have urged citizens, particularly senior citizens, to disconnect suspicious calls, avoid sharing sensitive financial information and report suspected cybercrime through the official portal, cybercrime.gov.in, or at their nearest police station.
