Para-Athletics Powers India’s Record 114-Medal Asian Para Games Haul

India’s record-breaking campaign at the 2026 Asian Para Games highlighted both the dominance of para-athletics and the growing contribution of other disciplines, with the country finishing fourth overall with 114 medals, including 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze.

India’s medal haul in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, surpassed its previous best of 108 medals at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, where the country won 27 gold, 32 silver and 49 bronze medals. The latest performance also marked India’s best-ever finish at the continental event.

Para-athletics remained the backbone of India’s campaign, accounting for 65 medals, including 22 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze. The discipline alone contributed more than half of the country’s overall medal tally, underlining its importance to India’s para-sport programme.

However, the results also reflected contributions from disciplines beyond athletics, particularly para-badminton, para-swimming, para-archery and para-table tennis.

Para-badminton emerged as India’s second-largest medal contributor, with 16 medals comprising three gold, five silver and eight bronze. Its performance demonstrated the country’s ability to compete across multiple events and classifications in the sport.

Para-swimming added 11 medals, including three silver and eight bronze, marking a significant improvement from the single medal India secured in the discipline at the 2022 Games.

Para-table tennis also recorded progress, with Indian athletes winning seven bronze medals, compared with two at the previous edition. Although the sport did not produce a gold or silver medal, the increased medal count highlighted its contribution to the broader campaign.

Para-archery delivered six medals, including three gold and three silver, while shooting para sport accounted for five medals, comprising two gold, two silver and one bronze. Para-powerlifting and para-judo contributed two medals each, further widening India’s medal-winning spread.

The sport-wise distribution, however, shows that India’s success remained concentrated in a few disciplines. Para-athletics alone accounted for 65 of the 114 medals, while para-badminton and para-swimming together contributed another 27. These three sports collectively delivered 92 medals, or more than 80 per cent of India’s overall haul.

The figures suggest that while India has expanded its medal-winning presence across disciplines, athletics continues to provide the strongest foundation for its performance at the continental level.

India’s final tally of 114 medals, achieved with a 168-member contingent, provided a new benchmark for its para-sport programme.
