Jaishankar Calls For UN Reforms, Says It Must Lead on Global Crises

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday called for reforms in the United Nations, saying the global body must demonstrate leadership in addressing international crises rather than remain a spectator.

His remarks came on the occasion of the 81st United Nations Day on October 24.

Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to the UN and its Charter, stressing the need for reformed multilateralism that reflects contemporary global realities.

In a post on X, he said India would continue to champion international peace and security, global cooperation and the aspirations of the Global South.

“Large parts of the world cannot be left out from decision-making. The UN must show leadership, not be a spectator to global crises,” he said, according to ANI.

Addressing a gathering at Bharat Mandapam, Jaishankar also called for stronger international cooperation against terrorism, describing it as a serious threat to peace that could neither be justified nor rationalised. He urged countries to demonstrate zero tolerance towards terrorism.

The minister highlighted the connection between peace, economic progress and shared prosperity, warning that unequal development could fuel instability in an interconnected world.

He also acknowledged India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping, noting that Major Abhilasha Barak received the UN Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award for 2026 in recognition of her service.

United Nations Day is observed annually on October 24 to mark the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. India has continued to call for changes to international institutions to make decision-making more representative and transparent.
