IPL 2027 Auction Set for December 16 in Goa

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 mini-auction is scheduled to take place in Goa on December 16, with franchises preparing to finalise their player retention plans ahead of the November 15 deadline, according to reports.

The one-day auction will coincide with the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. The IPL governing body is expected to share the registered player pool with franchises after the retention deadline, allowing teams to shortlist candidates before the final auction list and bidding sequence are circulated in the week preceding the event.

The trading window has already seen two player exchanges since the conclusion of the 2026 season. Lucknow Super Giants traded captain Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals in June in exchange for wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. In another deal, Delhi Capitals sent fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for uncapped leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.

Under IPL regulations, the trading window opens a month after the previous season concludes and remains active until a week before the auction. It subsequently reopens and stays available until a month before the next season begins.

The schedule for the 2027 IPL season has not yet been officially announced. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia indicated after the board’s Annual General Meeting in September that the tournament could begin towards the end of March. The IPL had earlier outlined a March 14-May 30 window for the 2027 edition as part of its three-season scheduling plan announced in 2024.

The December event will be the final mini-auction in the current IPL cycle, with a mega-auction planned ahead of the 2028 season. That auction will also precede the league’s next media rights cycle, although the Board of Control for Cricket in India has yet to issue the tender for the rights.

The IPL’s existing media rights were sold for Rs 48,390.5 crore in 2022, equivalent to approximately USD 6.2 billion, underlining the tournament’s commercial standing in global sport.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru are the defending champions after defeating Gujarat Titans in the 2026 final in Ahmedabad.
