Singapore Launches AI-Powered App With Google DeepMind To Detect Online Scams

Singapore: Singapore’s Government Technology Agency (GovTech) has introduced an Android application that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify potential scams across WhatsApp, Telegram and SMS conversations, strengthening efforts to protect users from online fraud.

Named AntiScam Pango, the application is currently available in open beta and has been developed in collaboration with Google DeepMind. The initiative was announced by Jasmin Lau, Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information, at GovTech’s Stack 2026 conference on November 4.

The app analyses incoming message notifications directly on users’ devices, identifying suspicious exchanges and warning individuals before they fall victim to fraudulent schemes. Its AI models have been trained using real and artificially generated scam conversations reflecting tactics commonly used in Singapore.

According to GovTech, Pango uses Google’s lightweight Gemma AI model alongside a smaller screening system to examine suspicious messages while conserving battery power. It can assess multiple exchanges from the same sender, helping detect scams that develop gradually.

In one example, the application flagged a conversation promoting an investment opportunity that eventually demanded a S$200 registration fee.

The agency said message analysis takes place entirely on the device, ensuring private conversations are not routinely shared with external servers. Information is transmitted only when users choose to report a suspicious exchange.

The launch comes amid growing concerns over digital fraud. Singapore Police Force data showed messaging platforms accounted for 27.6% of reported scam cases during the first half of 2026.

Currently, Pango supports Android devices, with GovTech exploring possibilities for iOS compatibility. The agency is also considering integrating its features into ScamShield, Singapore’s existing anti-scam application.
