Washington: Democrats have secured control of both chambers of the US Congress following significant victories in the November 4, 2026, midterm elections, setting the stage for increased political scrutiny of President Donald Trump’s administration during the remaining two years of his presidency.
The election outcome marks a major setback for Republicans, with Democrats winning the House of Representatives and flipping several Senate seats, including in traditionally Republican states such as Texas, Kansas and South Carolina, according to projections by US television networks.
The results reflect growing voter dissatisfaction with the Republican leadership and are being viewed as a wider assessment of Trump’s performance since returning to the White House.
Reacting to the Democratic victory, Congressman Robert Garcia, who is expected to lead the House Oversight Committee, issued a strong warning to the outgoing Republican leadership and members of the Trump administration.
Garcia told the administration to prepare for legal scrutiny, using the phrase “lawyer up” in his response to the election results. His remarks signal the possibility of intensified congressional investigations into the administration once Democrats formally assume control of Congress.
With both chambers under Democratic control, the White House could face increased oversight, hearings and demands for accountability on several policy and governance issues.
The election outcome is also expected to reshape Washington’s political landscape, potentially complicating the administration’s legislative agenda and intensifying tensions between Congress and the presidency.
The change in congressional leadership comes as Trump enters the final two years of his term, with Democrats preparing to use their strengthened position to challenge his administration’s decisions and policies.
