Cyprus: A passenger ferry carrying around 270 people capsized off the coast of Cyprus on Sunday, shortly after leaving Girne, also known as Kyrenia, for Taucu in Trkiye’s Mersin province, the Cyprus Mail reported.
The ferry reportedly began taking on water before capsizing about two kilometres north of the Kyrenia coast early on Sunday afternoon.
Turkish Cypriot Coast Guard vessels and a rescue helicopter were deployed to the area. Civilian boats also set sail from Kyrenia to assist in the search and rescue operation, while ambulances were placed on standby at the port.
The publication quoted Kyrenia Mayor Murat enkul as saying that the situation was “serious”. There was no immediate confirmation of casualties or the number of people rescued.
This is a developing story.
