Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has reaffirmed Bruno Fernandes’ position as club captain, insisting that the Portuguese midfielder remains committed to the team despite recent tensions over tactics and selection.
Fernandes was left out of the starting line-up for United’s 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth on Sunday after reportedly questioning the team’s approach following a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como.
The pair held discussions at United’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday to resolve their differences and move forward. However, it remains uncertain whether Fernandes will return to the starting eleven for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea.
Carrick said there was no question over Fernandes retaining the captaincy, describing him as a key figure in the squad and praising his leadership over the years.
The United manager stressed that Fernandes remained determined to help the club improve and said his commitment had not changed despite the recent developments.
United’s defeat to Bournemouth had also raised questions over Carrick’s future, but he is set to remain in charge for the Chelsea fixture as the club looks to improve its performances.
