IMD Issues Rain Alerts For 14 States As Mumbai Faces Heatwave

New Delhi: Delhi-NCR and several parts of northern India are likely to experience light rainfall, cloudy skies and strong winds over the next few days as weather conditions change amid the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rainfall alerts for 14 states, warning of heavy showers in several regions due to cyclonic activity associated with the retreating monsoon.

Heavy rainfall is expected over the next three days, particularly in Uttarakhand, Bihar and Jharkhand, while West Bengal and other eastern states are likely to experience unsettled weather over the next three to four days. Southern states, including Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, are also expected to receive heavy rainfall between October 9 and 11.

In the northeastern region, rainfall is expected to continue across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura until October 14. Eastern Madhya Pradesh may receive rainfall until October 11, while Chhattisgarh is likely to witness showers on October 14. Meanwhile, as the southwest monsoon pulls back, Maharashtra is experiencing rising temperatures, with the India Meteorological Department issuing heatwave warnings for parts of the state, including Mumbai, Thane and Raigad.

According to the IMD, hot weather conditions intensified in Mumbai on Friday, October 9, 2026, with dry weather expected to follow for the remainder of the forecast period. Raigad is experiencing similar weather initially, followed by isolated heatwave conditions and a subsequent return to warm weather.

The IMD issued a Yellow Alert (Watch – Be Aware) for Day 2, expanding coverage along the western belt to include Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur and its ghats, Satara and its ghats, Sangli, and Sholapur.

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, the yellow alert narrows to select coastal, southern and ghat districts, specifically Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, the Ghats of Kolhapur, the Ghats of Satara, and Sangli. By Day 4, Sunday, October 11, and Day 5, Monday, October 12, conditions are expected to normalise completely, with green warnings, indicating that no adverse weather action is required, returning across the entire state of Maharashtra, the IMD said.

On Thursday, the IMD issued a yellow alert for a heatwave in parts of Mumbai and Raigad for Friday, as temperatures continued to rise above normal. The heatwave warning comes after the IMD announced the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Mumbai on October 3.

According to the IMD, Santacruz in Mumbai recorded a temperature of 37.6°C, which was 4.5°C above normal. Weather experts expect hot conditions to continue through October 14 or possibly until the middle of next week. The changing weather patterns have also drawn attention from economic analysts tracking agricultural risks.
