Woman Allegedly Tries To Attack Mamata Banerjee With Knife At Kalighat Home

Kolkata: A woman allegedly attempted to enter former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s security cordon with a knife outside her Kalighat residence in Kolkata on Tuesday evening, the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) claimed.

According to Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen’s written complaint to Kalighat police, the incident occurred around 6 pm when Banerjee stepped out to inaugurate a Durga Puja pandal near her residence.

The woman, identified as Tannishtha Saha, allegedly claimed Banerjee was her paternal aunt. After being denied entry, she reportedly tried to enter the security cordon from the front, lay on the road and hurled abuses. A knife was subsequently found in her possession, Sen stated.

TMC workers allegedly overpowered the woman and handed her over to the police. The party raised concerns over Banerjee’s security. Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Rahul De, did not respond to calls and messages.

Earlier, TMC’s student and youth wings held a protest in Kolkata’s Rajabazar after police stopped their planned march to Park Circus, citing the lack of permission.
The demonstrators demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

The TMC faction said police had been informed by email, while Kolkata Police maintained that written permission was required.

The party also criticised BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s remarks warning against the rally and the possible deployment of central forces, calling them a threat to peaceful protest and democratic rights.
