Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of undermining the Constitution through alleged electoral irregularities, asserting that his party would continue its fight for accountability.
Addressing Congress workers during the party’s ‘Goy Rakhon Yatra’ in Margao, South Goa, Gandhi alleged that the alleged theft of votes amounted to an attack on the country’s democratic principles and constitutional values.
“By stealing votes, they have attacked the Constitution,” Gandhi said, adding that the Congress would not accept what he described as an assault on democracy and would pursue justice.
Gandhi alleged that Kumar was facilitating electoral manipulation, Shah was overseeing its implementation and Modi was directing the alleged plan. He also referred to more than 45 defamation cases he said he was facing, including those filed by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, and questioned why no separate case had been initiated over his allegations of vote theft.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha claimed that legal proceedings specifically addressing his allegations could lead to a wider judicial examination of the matter. He walked around two kilometres alongside Congress leaders and party workers during the event.
Gandhi also criticised the state of education and the alleged use of pellet guns against student protesters. Turning to Goa’s governance, he accused the state of widespread corruption and described it as a model of corrupt administration.
His remarks come amid an ongoing confrontation between the Congress-led Opposition and the Election Commission over alleged electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
