New Delhi: Biometric Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for domestic LPG consumers seeking subsidised refills from October 1, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said on Friday.
Under the new requirement, consumers will need to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication to book LPG refills at the regulated Retail Selling Price (RSP) with the applicable subsidy.
The government said the measure aims to ensure that subsidised LPG reaches genuine and eligible households. Linking each LPG connection to an Aadhaar-authenticated consumer is expected to help prevent the diversion of subsidised domestic cylinders for commercial and industrial use.
The process will also help identify duplicate or ineligible connections and make subsidy delivery more targeted and transparent.
The ministry clarified that the requirement is not intended to deny LPG supplies to genuine households. Eligible consumers can complete biometric authentication through multiple channels, including at the time of LPG delivery, at their distributor’s showroom or through Oil Marketing Company (OMC) mobile applications.
According to the ministry, 27.43 crore LPG consumers have already completed the authentication process and do not need to take any further action.
Consumers who have not yet completed the process will need to do so before booking subsidised refills under the new system.
