Aichi-Nagoya: Indian boxer Priya advanced to the women’s 60kg semifinals at the Asian Games on Monday, securing another medal for the country after defeating Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova by unanimous decision.
Priya dominated the quarterfinal, earning a 5-0 verdict from the judges. She edged the opening round 3-2 before producing a stronger second round, which she won 5-0, and maintained her advantage to close out the contest.
Her semifinal berth assures India of another boxing medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
Priya’s result came a day after Parveen Hooda booked her place in the women’s 65kg semifinals. Parveen defeated Uzbekistan’s World Championships silver medallist Navbakhor Khamidova 5-0 in the quarterfinals.
Parveen controlled the bout from the outset, winning the three rounds 4-1, 5-0 and 5-0 to secure a comprehensive victory and confirm her medal.
The result marks an important comeback for Parveen, whose bronze medal from the 2022 Asian Games was rescinded following a doping violation. She will now have an opportunity to fight for the gold medal at Aichi-Nagoya.
India had also secured a men’s boxing medal on Sunday through Ankush Panghal in the 80kg category. Ankush defeated Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov 5-0 in the quarterfinals to progress to the last four.
Ankush dictated the bout with his speed and punching, leaving his opponent unable to match his pace as the Indian secured a unanimous victory.
With Priya, Parveen and Ankush through to the semifinals, India’s boxing contingent has added three more guaranteed medals to its Aichi-Nagoya campaign.
