New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he was confident that the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi would lead to “positive and meaningful” discussions on issues of global importance as India prepares to host leaders from member countries.
Modi, in a social media post, shared a Sanskrit verse while highlighting the significance of the two-day summit, which begins Saturday.
“Leaders from around the world will gather for the BRICS Summit in the coming days. There is full confidence that the summit will feature positive and meaningful discussions on various issues, with aspirations for global welfare,” Modi said.
Ahead of the summit, Modi is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. The talks are expected to cover economic and strategic issues, including strengthening trade resilience, cross-border payment mechanisms and energy security.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss ongoing geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and West Asia, including possible pathways toward conflict resolution.
According to the Kremlin, Putin will address the plenary session of the BRICS Business Forum on Friday, a key event ahead of the leaders’ summit that brings together business representatives from BRICS member countries.
On Saturday, Modi will join other BRICS leaders for the main summit, which Chinese President Xi Jinping will also attend.
BRICS has evolved into an important platform for major emerging economies to coordinate on economic and global governance issues. The grouping gives members a forum to develop common positions on issues affecting the Global South and advance their interests in multilateral institutions.
Its agenda covers a wide range of areas, including development, finance, technology, trade and people-to-people exchanges. The grouping also provides members with an avenue to share experiences and work collectively on common challenges.
The 2026 summit marks India’s fourth BRICS chairship. India has chosen “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” as the theme for its chairship.
The theme reflects New Delhi’s emphasis on strengthening BRICS institutions and consolidating the grouping’s existing achievements, while placing development, sustainability and innovation at the center of its agenda.
India has also sought to use its chairship to amplify the priorities and aspirations of the Global South and position BRICS as a constructive and solutions-oriented platform for addressing shared global challenges.
